About Gulf States Newsletter

Published fortnightly since 1974, Gulf States Newsletter (GSN) provides hard-hitting news and political risk analysis on the six Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) members, plus Iran, Iraq and Yemen. Gulf States Newsletter also analyses the regional policies of the USA and other international players, plus Jordan, Syria and other stakeholders in the wider Middle East region.

Gulf States Newsletter has a strong focus on the personalities and trends shaping finance, energy, security, defence policy and the general business environment. Its incisive and outspoken analysis covers everything from the in-fighting in ruling families to the prospects for defaults on trade payments.

Gulf States Newsletter does not carry paid advertising (with all the commercial pressures that implies) and exists only through subscription income. GSN has become a fixture on the Gulf scene by reporting with refreshing frankness about a region where transparency and plain-speaking are in short supply.

• Geopolitics and Security

Politics and security issues and strategically important locations are closely monitored. Gulf States Newsletter examines the balance of power within each country, sectarian tensions, bilateral relations within the region, and relations with the rest of the world at country and regional levels. Gulf States Newsletter closely follows developments in the defence arena and has monitored military procurement by countries in the region and chronicled the deployment of air, land and naval forces in the region for more than 30 years.

• An International Perspective

The roles of the United Nations, Paris, London, Moscow and Beijing in regional conflicts are critically analysed and reported on via a very well-informed network of contacts, as are the positions of Gulf neighbours such as Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

• Domestic Politics

Succession and the process of political change – including elections and women’s rights – are critical issues for Gulf States Newsletter. GSN profiles and tracks the personalities the rulers, princes, kings, emirs and their successors across the region. Internal risks and security threats are also carefully scrutinised.

• Finance and energy

Gulf States Newsletter examines the political, economic and social impacts of the Gulf’s massive oil and gas reserves, how they impact on decision-making by OPEC and their influence on foreign policy positions taken across the world.

As countries pursue economic diversification to reduce reliance on oil revenues, Gulf States Newsletter looks at how countries are developing thriving banking and financial services industries, vibrant tourism sectors and harnessing technology to create new industries in the knowledge economy.

• Risk Management Reports and GSN Ratings

Country-specific Risk Management Reports and GSN Ratings in each issue of Gulf States Newsletter provide invaluable tools for those concerned with political and commercial risk assessment in the region. As well as political risks that impact across the board, risks specific to the oil, gas, petrochemical, banking, insurance and industrial sectors are examined.

• Other services

Reports (available to non-subscribers) provide intelligence on issues considered extremely important that are rarely addressed elsewhere – from issues surrounding succession in the Gulf monarchies to defence procurement and employment trends in GCC states.

Tailored Briefings, Seminars or Special Reports can be arranged on request. The Gulf States Newsletter team has worked for clients, including financial institutions, energy companies, governments and their agencies to provide intelligent analysis of issues, events, people and organisations and their impact on a client’s plans.
