The Gulf States Newsletter philosophy

Gulf States Newsletter (GSN) is the established and authoritative source of political and business trend analysis and intelligence on Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and the six Gulf Co-operation Council states.

Published fortnightly since 1974, GSN has a strong focus on the personalities and trends shaping the Gulf, from the established order to the emerging new generation political and business leaders and their influence in key areas such as government policy, security and defence, and finance and industry. GSN has become a fixture on the Gulf scene by reporting with refreshing frankness about a region where transparency and plain-speaking are often in short supply.

GSN does not just rewrite press releases or wire copy like so many web-based news aggregators and ‘information portals’. GSN goes further for its stories and information than its competitors to bring you an informed, no-nonsense appraisal of the latest developments – in the process talking to government and opposition figures, business and industry leaders, labour unions, and security and defence experts.

Through its independent, investigative approach to reporting, GSN has established a track record of delivering information and intelligence on the Gulf region in perspectives undistorted by advertising, third-party media, government communication channels or power-hungry 'sponsors' or 'backers'.

GSN’s highly experienced editorial team is based in the UK, New York and Washington, with correspondents across the region - in some cases protecting themselves by filing anonymously. Many of GSN’s contributors live and do business in the Gulf, while editorial staff frequently visit and talk to top political and business figures, among a wide range of key contacts in the region and international centres of power.

The depth with which subjects are treated means that GSN has a long shelf-life: it is held as a source of record and learning in leading academic institutions, as well as by government departments and corporate information centres.

GSN’s regular coverage includes:

  • In-depth analysis of the latest political and security developments, including elections, succession issues, new policy platforms, geopolitical spats and tensions and terrorist alerts and concerns.

  • Royals watch: a country by country survey tracking the movement, decisions and behaviour of the ruling Gulf families.

  • Defence concerns and capabilities: the deployment of armed forces and military procurement by countries in the region has been chronicled by GSN for more than 30 years.

  • Equities markets, foreign exchange and trade payment indicators.

  • Risk management reports: highlighting the political risks and economic developments that impact on the business environment and investment decisions.

  • Business trends – analysing the personalities and organisations that are shaping the way business is conducted in the Gulf.

  • Finance and industry: analysis of significant trends in the Gulf financial world - from project and export finance to Islamic finance - the influential hydrocarbon industries and non-oil sectors and investments.

More than a newsletter

GSN’s international team of writers is much in demand as technical and risk analysis experts, conference speakers and broadcasters, with deep on-the-ground experience of operating in the region. This expertise can be tapped through tailored briefings, seminars or special reports.

The GSN team has worked for clients, including financial institutions, energy companies, governments and their agencies to provide intelligent analysis of issues, events, people and organisations and their impact on a client’s plans. Gulf States Newsletter performs an important role as one of the few sources of accurate and up-to-date information on political and socio-economic issues and events in the Gulf.”

Rosemary Hollis, Director of Research Royal Institute of International Affairs

I have been a genuine admirer for many years. I regard GSN as the only one that focuses properly on Arabia and on Saudi Arabia in particular. That alone makes it very special as no country in the region is less understood in UK than Saudi Arabia.”

Stephen Day, consultant and former British ambassador to Qatar and Tunisia

Gulf States Newsletter provides a fund of information and insights for bankers and investors who are serious about doing business in the Gulf.”
